Asian Style Napa Cabbage Rolls

ASIAN STYLE NAPA CABBAGE ROLLS

Napa Cabbage Rolls stuffed with ground beef and bursting with Asian flavor!  

Really easy to make, perfect just with rice or an addition to an Asian banquet.

Ingredients


2 lb lean ground beef (ground pork, turkey or chicken would also work well)
4 medium shredded carrots
2 cups cooked brown rice
10 cloves finely chopped garlic
4 tbs grated ginger
2 small onions finely diced
4 tbs soy sauce
4 tbs sesame oil
4 tbs rice vinegar
2 tsp chili-garlic sauce, salt & pepper t taste
leaves from 1 or 2 Napa cabbage (16 large leaves)
1 cup chicken stock
For dipping sauce:
1 tsp Chinese 5 spice powder
4 tbs dark soy sauce
2 tbs honey
½ cup Shaoxing Wine
4 tbs rice vinegar
1 tsp sesame oil
½ tsp white pepper
1 tbs garlic-chili sauce

Instructions


Prepare meat filling

  • Preheat oven to 400 oF.
  • Place ground beef, carrots, brown rice, garlic, ginger, onions in a large bowl and mix together - hands work well!
  • Then add soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar and salt and pepper to the meat mix and combine together.  Set aside.
Prepare Napa cabbage leaves
  • Take at least 16 large leaves from Napa cabbage and wash them and pat dry.
  • To make them easy to roll, use a rolling pin to flatten leaves adding extra pressure to thicker, white stems.  The leaves will become flaccid, but keep their integrity. 
Stuff Napa cabbage leaves with meat
  • Take Napa cabbage leaf and have white stem closest to you.
  • Spoon about ½ a cup of meat mixture onto white stem end of leaf.
  • Use your hands to shape meat mixture across the bottom of the leaf  to make rolling easier (see photo).
  • Then roll leaf tightly around meat.
  • Place cabbage rolls into lightly oiled baking trays.
Dipping sauce
  • Combine Chinese 5 spice, dark soy sauce, honey, Shaoxing wine, rice vinegar, sesame oil, white pepper and garlic-chili sauce in a bowl and whisk together until all combined.  Warm sauce prior to serving if desired.
Baking the cabbage rolls
  • Add ½ cup chicken stock to each baking pan and cover with aluminum foil.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 30 - 35 minutes until meat is complete cooked through (internal temperature 155 oF).
  • Serve with some of the juices in the pan and drizzle with some of the dipping sauce.
